Smart Meter Calibration System
2018
A multithreaded calibration pipeline that took smart-meter manufacturing from one meter per cycle to forty.

What it did
The problem
Why it needed building
Manufacturing throughput was capped by a slow, sequential calibration workflow — each meter processed one after another, leaving expensive production lines waiting. The work was redesigning the calibration path to match the real constraints of the line without sacrificing accuracy.
The approach
How it works
Re-architected calibration around a multithreaded, batch-oriented pipeline tuned to the production hardware. Independent calibration units run in parallel, results stream back to SQL Server, and the line no longer blocks on a single serial queue.
- Batch Intake
- Parallel Calibration
- Result Streaming
- Verification
- 01Batch IntakeMeters grouped into calibration batches sized to the line
- 02Parallel CalibrationIndependent units calibrated across worker threads
- 03Result StreamingOutcomes streamed back and persisted to SQL Server
- 04VerificationPer-unit validation before the batch is released
The trade-off
What it cost
Parallelising the line meant giving up a simple failure model: one meter faulting mid-grid must not take the other thirty-nine with it, so per-slot error isolation and recovery became the real work. The pipeline is also tuned to that specific hardware — it is fast, not portable.
